تحقیقات انجام‌شده نشان داده است بیش از هشت صد ترکیب شیمیایی در لوازم زیباسازی
و عطرهای صنعتی وجود دارد و استفاده دایمی از این مواد باعث می گردد به تدریج
ترکیب‌های زیان آورشان جذب بدن می گردد و این امر می‌تواند در دراز مدت ایراد‌های متعددی
ایجاد کند. بااهمیت‌ترین علت استفاده طولانی مدت از این ترکیب‌های خطرناک ابتلا به
بعضی از انواع سرطان می باشد. مافوق بر سرطان، امکان ابتلا به پیری زودرس پوست و آکنه و حتی بعضی از بیماری‌های چرکی مانند ایدز هست.
برخی مواد آرایشی حاوی کلاژن یا ژلاتین هستند که برای قوام پوست و بهتر کردن ظاهر پوست مفید است. این محصولات با این شعار گران‌تر فروخته می‌شوند اما مشکل اینجاست
که کلاژن مصرفی در این محصولات دامی است و احتمال سرایت برخی بیماری‌های مرتبط مثل جنون گاوی به‌خصوص در انواع تقلبی وجود دارد. برخی از مواد آرایشی تقلبی حاوی آفلاتوکسین هستند
که سرطان‌زاست و صدمه‌های کبدی شدیدی وارد می‌کند و به‌راحتی از طریق سطح پوست جذب میشود. برخی محصولات آرایشی نیز حاوی بقایای جفت هستند که باعث بروز نگرانی‌هایی
در مورد انتقال بیماری‌هایی مثل ایدز یا هپاتیت میشود. در خانم‌های بارداری که جنین پسر دارند، مصرف برخی ترکیب‌های آرایشی می‌تواند باعث عقیمی فرزند در آینده شود.
زیان کدام مواد آرایشی بیشتر است؟
مصرف برخی مواد آرایشی بسیار شایع است؛
مثلا رژلب طرفداران زیادی دارد. رژ لب‌ها، حتی آنهایی که تولیدشده برند‌های معتبر
هستند، معمولا سرب دارند و آلودگی به سرب در درازمدت
باعث اختلال‌های رفتاری، افزایش پرخاشگری و کاهش بهره هوشی میشود. خستگی زودرس و کم‌خونی‌های مزمن نیز با این موضوع در ارتباط است و در خانم‌های باردار بر سلامت جنین
اثر می‌گذارد. محصولات سفیدکننده پوست، مخصوصا در انواع تقلبی، حاوی کولوبتازون هستند که یک کورتون قوی است و غیر از عوارض موضعی مثل برجسته شدن عروق و تورم پوست،
عامل کم‌کاری غده فوق‌کلیه، چاقی و پوکی استخوان هم هست. ریمل‌ها از دیگر لوازم آرایشی پرمصرف‌اند که عارضه اصلی آنها ریزش مژه است. پایه ریمل آب و روغن است و محیط مناسبی
برای رشد میکروب‌ها، انگل و آمیب‌هاست و می‌تواند باعث عفونت‌های چشمی، التهاب، قرمزی و آسیب به پلک شود.
